Sueños anónimos / Anonymous Dreams

…has been made possible through a San Francisco Individual Artist Commissions Grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission

deriva
, con humor sutil y delicioso como
en Copihue, y con una intensidad casi
explosiva como en Revelaciones y
El Valle de la Luna.

My Last Farewell (Mi último adiós)

Delicacy, passion and an engaging simplicity
of style combine to create this book of verse
evoking a world dominated by nature and the
yearning and search for love and meaning. The
author draws forth the extraordinary from the
ordinary with images and words that touch
the heart. The poems pulsate with sensuality
as in And Nothing More and Adrift,
with delightful and subtle humor
as in Copihue, and with an almost explosive
intensity as in Revelations and
The Valley of the Moon.

My Last Farewell (Mi último adiós)
a modern English translation of
José Rizal’s 19th century Philippine
poetic masterpiece in Spanish, reveals
the passion and fire of the original
version.

Anonymous Dreams is a contribution
not only to Philippine-American literature,
but also to Philippine-Spanish literature, an often
forgotten body of literature that had its golden
age approximately from the last quarter of the
19th century to the 1940's.

Received Comments about Sueños anónimos / Anonymous Dreams

Dear Edwin,

I have taken much too long to write you and thank you for Anonymous Dreams. I have read all the poems twice (at least).
I read a couple of them to my creative writing students before winter recess, and they commented that the poems are "tight!"
I love the themes -- love, joy, loss, pain, humor, history, spirituality -- woven together with nature and music.
I love the sparseness and precision of your language and the sharpness of your images.
Each poem is a gem, sometimes with a surprise. I especially like The Valley of the Moon -- it is a stunning poem.
I also learned something about Jose Rizal. The info about his life and your explanation about his poetry are instructive.
Translating his poetry was an ambitious undertaking, I am sure.
What an accomplishment. Congratulations and thanks again.

Best to you,

Sueños Anónimos is a truly remarkable work by Edwin Agustín Lozada.
In the poem "December 30, 1896" he brilliantly captures
the emotions and sentiments of the Spanish colonial conditions a century and a half ago.
His translation of "Mi último adiós" differs from previous translations in its clarity, simplicity and straightforward language.
He leaves a very Hispanic flavor in the fifth stanza with "salud!"
which creates a very dramatic impact and brings the reader into the realm of Rizal's "Filipinas" in the 19th century.
CONGRATULATIONS to the author, I am looking forward to more publications in the future.
.ENHORABUENA !!

If anything, I must confess that I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of your
poems while they effectively conveyed deep feelings and thoughts.
Congratulations! It is delightfully enviable to see one pursue and fulfill
his dreams, if not inspiring.

I also enjoyed the photographs of Chile in your site. I particularly like the
choice of subject, composition and how they come alive online.
Thanks for sharing your gifts and experiences. You will never be able to
fully measure nor understand the influence those will have on many people. : )

Mr. Lozada’s bilingual poetry provides an extraordinary bridge by which the universality of the themes he undertakes
to address can be conveyed. In general, quality poetry has been originated in one language or another,
and then typically translated by a second party. The artists’ fine sentiment is inevitably distorted by this intermediation.
Mr. Lozada bridges this gap by replicating his core themes for multiple audiences. This approach is original,
and extraordinary by virtue of the challenge it poses to the poet. Mr. Lozada provides continuity to his themes with great tenacity,
and yet able to convey images in language with relevant metaphors designed to leverage lingual cues.
He does this with great dexterity and originality, and in as fine a way as any poet I have read.

fenomenal.

(I'm very enthused about your book. In particular, the series of poems entitled "Revelations"
has greatly impressed me with a lyricism that many writers aspire to possess.
I consider the poem "December 30, 1896" to be phenomenal.)

RE: fechas presentación "Sueños anónimos"

Estimado Sr. Lozada:

enviado y dedicado.
(The copy of Sueños anónimos that you have so kindly sent and dedicated
has finally arrived. I've barely begun to leaf through it, but
el hechizo,
ansiedad amarilla, rayos de luna, solitario (one that I particularly like)
speak well of your sensibilities and your mastery of the language.)

(I don't deny that when someone offers us their work to be presented, there is always a fear
that the enthusiasm and good will of the author far exceeds the quality of the work.
But in this particular case the quality is indisputable and I feel very proud to be able
to present Sueños anónimos in this house which from now on you could also consider yours.)

(You don't know how much receiving your book of poetry touched me. It's a very beautiful collection,
and upon reading some of the poems I had the sensation of being once again
in Chile (specially "El Valle de la Luna")…and your photograph of Osorno also impressed me.
Naturally my favorite poems come from the section "Copihue"
although I do find the poems "preludio" and "un, dos, tres" entertaining and rhythmically pleasant.
Others that I would put on my list of favorites are: luna llena, cambios, perdido, la flor del corazón, transflormación.)
